How many pictures did we take?
March 28th, 2005 by Glenn Chase

Is the digital lifestyle overwhelming us? When my parents took us on vacation they probably shot two rolls of film with the family Instamatic (remember flashcubes?) When we returned home we wouldn’t see the pictures for over a week after we dropped the film off at the drugstore for processing.

I finally finished copying the last of the digital pictures from the compact flash cards I used in our Canon digital camera during our Disney spring break trip. Grand total of digital photos: 916.

That’s an average of 130 photos a day, and it doesn’t count the film photos we took with our waterproof disposable camera during our Dolphin Encounter at Blue Lagoon Island in the Bahamas, or the disposable camera we gave Alison to take her own photos.

Sure, I’m thrilled that I can shoot that many photos and not have to worry about the expense of film. But is the task of reviewing all of those and cropping/enhancing/fixing red-eye making photo taking a 21st century burden techno-burden? Now that we have the ability to capture events and document them in online weblogs are we obsessed with maximizing our use of the technlogy just because we can?

Enough pontificating. I have a lot of pictures, and some of them are worth sharing, so you can look forward to seeing them in this blog. I’ve set up a flickr account and hope to have my favorites online soon.
