Discovering Lisa Loeb

Lisa Loeb

A friend of mine at work has an audio stream (powered by QuickTime Streaming Server) that’s one of my favorite things to listen to during the day. His musical tastes and knowledge are much broader than mine, so I am constantly exposed to new artists and songs that I’ve never heard before.

One day while listening to KMAG (the name of his stream) I heard a song that instantly piqued my interest and I inquired about it the next time I saw him. “Who sings that song that goes “I probably love you” ?

“Oh, that’s Lisa Loeb, from her latest CD, ‘The Way it Really is‘ he said. “She’s from Dallas.”

Before the day was over I had been to the iTunes Music Store and auditioned all of the Lisa Loeb tracks available for download. From those 30 second samples I downloaded my favorites and burned a CD to listen to in my MINI Cooper. By now Alison has heard the songs so many times she sings along to them almost word for word. If you haven’t discovered Lisa Loeb, here’s my recommended “starter pack” (titles link to the iTunes Music Store so you can preview them in iTunes):

From Cake and Pie (and also on Hello Lisa)

  • Underdog
  • Someone You Should Know
  • You Don’t Know Me
  • From Firecracker

  • I Do
  • From The Rugrats Movie

  • All Day
  • (I originally included this for Alison, who adores Rugrats, but it’s a catchy number I like more and more each time I hear it)

From The Way It Really Is

  • I Control the Sun
  • Fools Like Me
  • Probably
  • Now I Understand

Allison Millard knows her family, by the way.

Thanks Glen! I always appreciate getting e-mails from you at work when you have questions about my stream. Some days the stream can be a chore but I enjoy every minute of it, especially when I receive questions or compliments.

As for Lisa, she is pretty cool. At first I thought she was lame with her first song from Reality Bites but she persisted, continued to plug away and has really done some albums I really have enjoyed. She also gained more of my respect through her interviews and I thought that her short lived on Food Network with her boyfriend Dweezil Zappa was clever. Think about it, how many pop stars could actually anchor such a program? I think there’s only so much of Ted Nugent and deer jerky one could stand.

We need to hunt down the clip of her helping Stephen Colbert with the lyrics of “Stay” from the Colbert Report. That was such a funny and witty touch.

There is one more thing we can give Lisa credit for (or be mad about), Duncan Sheik used to be in her band so her fame helped catapult him to his recording career.
